I have downloaded malwarebytes and i have run the program, but it will not allow an update and is using definitions from sep 2009. At that time too I got my connection back after restoring. I downloaded it from another uninfected machine, then renamed the mbam.exe to mdefense.exe. Researching the problem, I came across concerns that the Chrome browser could have this behaviour, and the suggestion was to disable extensions. After repairing and restarting several times, I couldn't get my connection back. Quick scan completed found three items (deleted), tried rebooting and virus (Virus Protector) was still there. It has deleted all my previous restore points.

Downloaded mbam-exe using uninefected PC, renamed file and installed onto infected PC. Fix #1 about installing the rules.exe worked for me.
